So what exactly does that mean to us? Part of it is the chance to brew up our finest beverages for visitors to the Games. But we also view it as a celebration of both imagination and heart, an opportunity to encourage Olympic fans to express a shared commitment to the Games, the athletes and the spirit of international cooperation.
All materials used to produce Far Coast cups and lids in use at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics are derived from fully renewable resources. The paper fiber is sourced through a system certified to Sustainable Forestry Initiative® (SFI®) guidelines for management and harvesting. No trees from old-growth or endangered forests are used. More than two-thirds of the energy used to make the paperboard comes from renewable resources. Even the coatings used inside the cups (to make them liquid- and heat-resistant) are plant-based and require significantly less energy to produce than traditional petrochemical-derived coatings. Our cups and lids are fully recyclable, as well as landfill compostable. This is the first time ever that compostable cups have been used at an Olympic event.
Some 30,000 Far Coast reusable stainless steel travel mugs are now in use by Olympic volunteers working in Vancouver and Whistler. This eliminates the need for use of disposable cups during the event, and promotes sustainable solutions.
Look for Far Coast cafes and our 11-foot kiosk replication of the Far Coast cup and lid. And keep an eye out for our jetpack-wearing sample teams. The jetpacks are actually loaded up with delicious samples of our finest brewed beverages and dispensed free of charge to thirsty Olympics fans.
